Conscientious school teachers wish they could provide:
-
Higher teacher to student ratios.
-
Individualised planning for the needs of each child.
-
Adequate resources so students have enough hands-on experience with technology and equipment.
-
Adequate money to update libraries to include the latest children’s publications – the stuff kids really want to read, not necessarily the watered-down drivel often approved and bought from school suppliers.
-
Regular off campus excursions allowing freedom of movement and real learning experiences.
-
Effective work with bullies and loving support of the victimised.
-
Natural and student-led mentoring of younger students by those older, and ease of friendship across age divisions.
In these issues and many others, home educators are uniquely able to provide adequately and wonderfully for their children.
.
How many people would bother to:
-
become registered home educators with all the inherent effort involved in the process
-
sacrifice one partner’s income
-
choose a life of very little ‘me’ time
-
get no financial support to resource their children’s education
-
continue to pay taxes that pay for other people’s children to be educated
(the list, of course, goes on … )
… if they didn’t believe they were genuinely doing a better job than schools in educating their children?
.
I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide
the conditions in which they can learn.
